Remsoft Open Training in Eatonville, Washington
November 13th, 2017 to November 17th, 2017

Remsoft will host open training in Eatonville, Washington from November 13th – November 17th, 2017

The venue for this training will be:

School for Environmental and Forest Sciences

Center for Sustainable Forestry at Pack Forest

9010 453rd Street E

Eatonville, Washington, USA

Remsoft Open Training sessions are always a big hit and often sell-out. They are taught through demonstration and hands-on modeling exercises. Space is limited so please reserve your seat early.

Modeling Fundamentals (IMF) is the basic introduction to forest modeling using Woodstock. Other than a basic understanding of forestry concepts (silvics, harvesting systems, reforestation methods, etc.) there are no requirements for this class. That said, Fundamentals is an intense 2.5 day course that covers a lot of material. The cost for the 2.5 day course is $2,000.

Modeling Fundamentals will be held on Wednesday, November 15 - Friday, November 17

Modeling Workshops are advanced modeling classes and the expectation is that students are already adept at modeling constructs such as outputs and constraints. Prerequisites are listed for each workshop. Each workshop is an intensive half or full day session, and the cost is $500 per half day workshop or $1,000 for a full day workshop.

Modeling Workshops will be held on Monday, November 13 - Wednesday, November 15

Remsoft Integrator (WRI)                              1 day workshop                 $1000.00

Allocation Optimizer (WAO)                           1/2 day workshop             $ 500.00

Mixed Integer Programming (WMI)              1/2 day workshop             $ 500.00

Debugging and Due Diligence (W3D)            1/2 day workshop             $ 500.00

Monday, November 13th

Remsoft Integrator 1 - 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM  (Full Day)     **NEW**

Prerequisites: Complete fluency in Woodstock modeling, data preparation and QA (generally 1+ years of Woodstock experience following Modeling Fundamentals).

Remsoft Integrator is a scripting language add-on to the Woodstock Modeling System that can facilitate model development and maintenance through access to standardized data tables which are used to develop some (or all) of a Woodstock model section. The course begins with a review of Woodstock FOREACH loops and the selection of naming conventions to make development of standardized models easier. Next, we will use Integrator code to access data source files (shapefiles or personal geodatabases) to build up the Landscape and Areas files in an automated fashion. We will use price and costs data in Excel to update the Regimes and Yields sections.

In the afternoon we now look at incorporating Integrator code into template files that can be used to automate the update of model sections, or completely rewrite a new model from scratch. We will go over using templates with scenarios, as well as update regions (for updating only part of a model section). We will work through an example of importing yield tables from joined Access tables using an SQL query. Along the way we will discuss best practices and common data approaches that might help you organize your work.

Tuesday, November 14th

Allocation Optimizer - 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM

Prerequisites: Modeling Fundamentals + 6 months modeling experience

Allocation Optimizer (AO) is an extension to Woodstock to facilitate the development of delivered-price harvest scheduling models. Rather than just determine how and when to harvest trees, an AO model also considers where to deliver products based on the price each destination is paying and the cost to haul it there. Models can be enhanced with additional decisions (harvest systems and crews), product conversions (wood chips), and transport systems (trucks vs barge, etc.). In this workshop we will set up a basic supply chain for a 1-year block harvest schedule, learn to balance production and deliveries, and constrain solutions based on delivery, process and inventory controls.

Mixed Integer Programming – 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM   **UPDATED**

Prerequisites: Complete fluency in Woodstock modeling (theme-based outputs, free variables, constraint formulations using array syntax).

In most situations, linear-programming is sufficient to model most forest planning problems. In cases where decisions are discrete (yes/no, all/nothing, etc.), we need to employ mixed-integer programming (MIP). Woodstock offers multiple ways to model discrete decisions through automatic and manual formulations using user-declared variables and constraints. We first cover terminology and syntax and introduce a global discrete decision: which species do we plant (in all planning periods)? Then we look at decisions that change each planning period: of N districts, which M districts should we operate in each period? Next, we look at Woodstock’s controls to force all-or-nothing harvests at both the development type and analysis area unit levels, and how to use these structures using the Control Section and implement them manually. We wrap up with a look at various logic constraints that are the basis for adjacency constraints and road building and a simple linked decisions exercise.

Wednesday, November 15th

Due Diligence & Debugging - 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM

Prerequisite: Modeling Fundamentals + 6 months modeling experience

The focus of this workshop is how to improve model performance confidence in model results and performance. First, we look at the process of matrix generation itself and the clues it provides about your model: Are your outputs being calculated correctly? Do you have missing yields? Is your model needlessly large because of landscape themes that provide no value? Are all your actions being considered? Next, we look at strategies for debugging your model, and finding errors of omission and commission: Are the transitions creating development types that lack yields? How do you know if a development type is linking to the correct yield table? Finally, we look at various reports and assorted tips that can be used to track down hard-to-find problems in your models.

Modeling Fundamentals – 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM

Prerequisite: Basic understanding of forestry and forest-level planning objectives

Basic introduction to the Remsoft software suite, terminology, demo.

Thursday, November 16th

Modeling Fundamentals (continued) – 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM

Commence model building. Forest characterization. Initial area description. Simple harvest action, transitions and associated outputs.

Modeling Fundamentals (continued) – 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM

Stepwise refinement of the model (new actions, outputs) including reforestation, linked decisions (regimes and prescriptions). Basic inventory and action-based outputs. Objective functions and constraints.

Friday, November 17st

Modeling Fundamentals (continued) – 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM

Complete the formulation of the word problem. Outputs practice: inventory, operable inventory and action-based outputs. Limiting output calculations to discrete development type classes using age and yield values.

Modeling Fundamentals (continued) – 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM

Constraints formulations and scenario management. Dealing with infeasibility.
