Remsoft eyes more new markets for software

MARK TAYLOR Networking Markets continue to open up for Remsoft Inc. After selling its environmental software products to clients in dozens of countries around the world, the Fredericton-based information technology company is pursuing new opportunities, including a number of South American nations.

Andrea Feunekes, president and co-owner of Remsoft Inc., said she felt excited about the direction of the company. She said she will travel to South America in April for exploratory discussions in the area.

"We want to go down, lay the groundwork, learn about what's involved and how you have to do business there," she said.

Feunekes said she will visit a number of countries including Argentina and Chile. The countries hold real possibilities, she said. In addition to South America, Feunekes said, Remsoft Inc. is eyeing many opportunities in the United States. Doing business with companies interested in forest certification especially holds a lot of promise, she said. Forest certification allows companies to receive special identification as businesses that use environmentally responsible forestry practices. Businesses must meet strict standards before they can receive certification.

The company, a specialist in forest management software solutions, offers products useful for clients interested in forest certification, Feunekes said.

"Forest certification is quite big and it's really come on in the last few years," she said. "It's ... one of the reasons our software continues to be successful. It's really good at helping people plan and showing (an) auditor that they are meeting the criteria for certification."

Remsoft Inc. has also found success in New Zealand, Feunekes said. She said the company now holds about 50 per cent of the market share in the country. Remsoft Inc. is a family-owned company, Feunekes said.

She said her husband, Ugo Feunekes, helped start the company in 1992 and now serves as co-owner of the business. Her husband will also join her on the trip to South America, Feunekes said. Feunekes said she and her husband - graduates of the University of New Brunswick with master of science degrees in forestry - have extensive experience in consulting. But the focus of Remsoft Inc. has always been to develop excellent software tools, she said. A mother of two young children, Feunekes said she appreciates the opportunity to operate the company with her spouse. She said it has many benefits. "We do get flexibility. We know when we are going to be busy," she said. Feunekes said she and her husband always try to make sure as much time as possible is spent with their children. Like any business, she said, there are several challenges in operating her company.

Feunekes said the biggest challenge is education. She said she always has to know what it takes to be successful in the different markets Remsoft Inc. operates in. The Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States also presented a challenge, Feunekes said. The phone did not ring for several months after the attacks, she said.

But business has since recovered well, she said. Originally from Montreal, Feunekes said she enjoys operating a business in Fredericton. The city offers a great quality of life and excellent business support, Feunekes said. Remsoft Inc. is really benefiting from what the city has to offer, she said. Feunekes also credited the quality of the company's products for its success. She said Remsoft Inc. is a well-known name internationally. After more than 10 years in business, the goal of the company is still the same, Feunekes said. "Our goal is to provide the best strategic planning software out there," she said.
